The aim of my paper is to make a clear presentation upon the article in English as it is a basic element in correct usage of the English language. As the title suggests it, the article is the main central determiner in the English noun phrase and this thing is also said by Randolph Quirk: “The articles have been shown to be intimately connected with the nouns they determine, and the class of determiner has been defined as a sort of closed-system items that are mutually exclusive with the articles”.
The first chapter of my paper entitled “Noun Determiners” contains a general presentation of the determiner of the nouns in English. Stress is laid on the interrelationship of noun determiners in English an Romanian because as we will notice from this chapter there are many similarities between the noun determiners of these two languages in contrast with other languages. Although, as it is expected there are some differences which are noted down in subchapter 1.1. Subchapter 1.2. contains a classification of determiners based on the grammars of Laszlo Budai and Leon Levitchi. Chapter 2 entitled “The Articles” contains definitions of the article as it is seen by Alexandra Cornilescu in “Concept of Modern Grammar”, by Alice Badescu in “Gramatica Limbii Engleze”, by Eugenia Panescu in “Gramatica Limbii Engleze”, by L.G. Alexander in “Longman Advanced Grammar. Reference and Practice” and by R. Quirk in “A Grammar of Contemporary English”. In the next three chapters I will discuss about the definite article, the indefinite article and about the zero article. I will discuss about the uses of these articles and I will give some special cases when instead of an article is preferred another type of article and other cases when the article is not use. I will also explain the difference between the elypsis of the article and the zero article. In subchapter 4.4. I will make a special consideration upon both the definite and the indefinite article.
The subject of this paper is of a great importance because it is essential for studying English grammar. Although it may seem a simple subject, I will prove in my paper that there are many things to be known about the article, some exceptions and special cases that I mentioned in this paper and that are worth being kept in mind.
